Please introduce yourself…

Hey we‘re Sean and Jo and together we started Young Love Apparel. YLA began out of our love for photography and wanting to find a creative project to work on together. We started YLA in Manchester in August 2012, when me and Jo lived together. We saved up some money waiting tables and then got working over the kitchen table to come up with our designs.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Our influences range from Black Flag inspiring us with their DIY ethos, Gary Winogrand and his the freedom and daring in his street photography and the adventures of Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty in On The Road. We agree with Kerouac when he said ‘The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time‘ these are the people that inspire us.

Do you work alone or do you collaborate with others? Any collaborations planned?

To this point we‘ve worked alone to try and preserve our vision and the aesthetic we desire for YLA. But who knows what the future holds, we‘d certainly be interested in collaborating with like minded people.

How important is music while working on new stuff?

Music plays a big influence for us as individuals and I think this comes through on the designs and presentation of YLA. Between us we have wide ranging tastes in music, from minor threat and the minutemen to skip james and howlin‘ wolf, to tribe called quest and pete rock.

What music is playing right now?

Right now I‘m listening to „Bullet“ by the Misfits, check out the lyrics for a truly horrific song, one of the Misfits best.

Name a current „anti-trend“.

We‘re a bit tired of seeing upside down crosses and kittens on everything.

Great labels we should know about?

Whenever I‘m on tumblr, the London based label Shade always catches my eye, some nice designs and tight branding. I also love the Palace Skate Boarding logo T-shirt, I mean to get myself one of them soon. And we both like what Norse Projects are doing.
