Smalltalk ─ Februar 2013 Das Monk
Smalltalk mit Marc Hendrick von Das Monk aus Sydney/Los Angeles.
Please introduce yourself…
My name is Marc Hendrick, I am a designer and former architect, and one half of Sydney based label Das Monk. The label has been kicking around since 2007.
Where do you get your inspiration?
Anywhere with art in it… galleries, album covers, tattoos, photos, old brand identities. Luckily the internet (especially tumblr) is a great source of many of these things.
Do you work alone or do you collaborate with others? Any collaborations planned?
It’s all collaboration. The concept of the label is that we’re an artist collective, so other than the occasional designs we do in-house, every piece we put out is a collaboration with an artist, designer or photographer from all over the world.
How important is music while working on new stuff?
Music is just important in general! You’d have to move around with your eyes closed to not get a daily source of visual inspiration… that’s the easy part. But to get aural inspiration you need to be listening to good music all the time!
What music is playing right now?
Name a current „anti-trend“.
Well most anti-trends end up turning into trends pretty quickly because of the fast-moving nature of the things like instagram/tumblr etc, so anti-trends are almost a thing of the past. You’re either dressed really badly or it’s the next big thing before you know it!
Great labels we should know about?
Great blogs we should visit?
I subscribe to about 200 blogs through my google reader, so I struggle to differentiate them from one another. But one that pops up all the time with really cool art stuff is Colossal. And of course our blog!
We constantly update with new collections so it changes all the time, but over the last couple of months we’ve been getting a lot of parrot love for our „Papagayo“ print, which is a photograph by the very excellent South African photographer Nico Krijno. Everyone’s digging the tropical vibe over this hot Sydney summer.
